<p>The unit was formed as the 305th Bombardment Wing at MacDill AFB in January 1951 with the B-29A and KC-97E to conduct training for SAC crews destined for the Korean War. The B-47 was received late in 1952. The wing moved to Bunker Hill AFB, IN (renamed Grissom AFB) in June 1959 and converted to KC-135A. The 305th became the second B-58A Hustler wing in May 1961, although the type was retired in January 1970 and the unit was redesignated the 301st ARW. The EC-135 post attack command control system was assigned in 1966 and operated by the 3rd ACCS from April 1970 to December 1975, when the unit was absorbed into the 70th ARS. The 305th upgraded to the KC-135R during the latter half of 1988. Redesignated 305th Wing in October 1991, the unit reverted to an ARW before being inactivated in late 1993. The unit reformed as the 305th Air Mobility Wing at McGuire AFB, replacing the 438th AW to become the East Coast Air Mobility gateway on 1 October 1994.
